Tesla begins job hunting in India after Modi-Musk meet, announces hiring plans

India's reduced import duties and the growing EV market offer a significant opportunity for Tesla amidst slowing sales.
Renewable giant Tesla Inc. who has mere presence in India has on Monday announced plans to start hiring in India as it seeks candidates for 13 roles, including customer-facing and back-end jobs, according to job postings uploaded by the company on its LinkedIn page recently.
The step by the company comes shortly after the CEO Elon Musk had met Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the latter's United States visit.
What are the job positions?
At least five of the positions, including service technician and various advisory roles, were available in both Mumbai and Delhi while the rest of the openings, such as customer engagement manager and delivery operations specialist, were for Mumbai.

On-and-off relationship between India-Tesla
Tesla and India have engaged on-and-off for years, but the carmaker had stayed away from the South Asian nation over concerns on high import duties. India’s now reduced basic customs duty on high-end cars priced above $40,000 from 110% to 70%.
The country is the world’s third-biggest greenhouse gas emitter but is seeking to decarbonize its economy and turn net zero by 2070. That coupled with the country’s increasingly affluent shoppers makes India one of the few bright spots for EVs.
Tesla and India have been at an impasse for years over high import taxes that its Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk has repeatedly pointed out as a deterrent.
Musk was scheduled to visit India in April last year and meet PM Narendra Modi, sparking speculation about the US carmaker’s investments in the South Asian nation that included setting up a manufacturing facility. Musk, days later, postponed his visit to tend to pressing issues at Tesla that had slashed its workforce and recalled some of its vehicles in the US.
Tesla has for years been been making a case for cutting import taxes before it commits to any significant investment in India. New Delhi in March slashed the import duty on EVs for companies that set up local factories with at least 41.5 billion rupees ($500 million) of investment.
