Meta plans to cut 3,600 roles to hire new AI talent

The workforce expanded to 74,067, but 3,600 roles (5%) will be cut to hire new AI talent. Meta plans $60-65 billion in AI investments for 2025, with total expenses projected at $114-119 billion. Q1 2025 revenue is expected to grow 8-15% to $39.5-41.8 billion.
Meta reported higher profits and revenue for 2024 and outlined plans to expand its artificial intelligence infrastructure in 2025. The company’s AI-focused strategy initially pushed its stock up by 5 in after-hours trading before settling at a 2% gain.
Meta’s net income rose 59% to $62.36 billion for the year, with fourth-quarter profits increasing 49% to $20.84 billion. Revenue grew 22% to $164.5 billion, supported by a 10% rise in ad prices and an 11% increase in ad impressions. Daily active users across Meta’s platforms reached 3.35 billion in December, up 5% from the previous year.
CEO Mark Zuckerberg reaffirmed Meta’s commitment to AI, predicting that its AI assistant would reach over a billion users in 2025. He acknowledged the high costs involved in scaling AI services but emphasized the company’s long-term vision. Meta plans $60-65 billion in capital expenditures next year, primarily for AI development, with total expenses projected at $114-119 billion.
The company expanded its workforce by 10% in 2024, reaching 74,067 employees, with plans to hire more technical talent. However, Meta recently announced a 5% reduction in staff, cutting 3,600 low-performing roles to make room for new hires.
Meta also adjusted content moderation and diversity initiatives while ending its US fact-checking program. These policy shifts come as the company navigates regulatory scrutiny and competition from emerging AI firms. Meta projects first-quarter 2025 revenue of $39.5-41.8 billion, reflecting expected growth of 8-15 percent.
